Series; The Eastern Capital

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

View of Nihon Bridge - Handsome view of the Nihonbashi or Nihon Bridge over the Sumida River in Edo. Boats move along the water, passing docks where laborers are unloading ships. The bridge is crowded with people, and Mt Fuji can be seen in the distance on the left, while the towers of the castle can be seen at right. A nicely detailed design showing an interest in Western perspective. Includes embossing along the edges of the clouds and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.

Artist - Hokuju (active circa 1789 - 1818)

Image Size - 10 1/4" x 14 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Excellent overall with no issues to report.
