Original Eizan (1787 - 1867) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hawk, Pine, and Rising Sun Kakemono

Comments - Terrific Eizan kakemono or vertical diptych of a regal hawk perched on a rugged pine tree with a red sun rising in the sky. The pine tree is a treasured Japanese symbol of longevity. Beautifully rendered with calligraphic strokes detailing the rough tree bark and finer lines creating the feathers. A dramatic composition with the form of the tree trunk moving sinuously down the page, in contrast with the strong vertical of the bird, with the delicately shaded red sun filling the sky behind. The British Museum has this image in its collection. A fantastic, Edo era kakemono subject.
