The Shogun Hearing a Lawsuit at Fukiage, 1889 - Beautiful Chikanobu triptych of two courtesans arriving at Fukiage Palace for a lawsuit to be heard before the Shogun. A row of nobleman sits along the open verandah, with additional retainers seated behind a fine bamboo blind, where the Shogun would be hidden from view. One beauty kneels respectfully on a straw mat, her elegant kimono spreading out around her. It features a handsome design of a lion above a waterfall bordered with colorful peonies. The courtesan behind her wears a striking kimono patterned with two roosters against a deep red ground, the white feathers delicately embossed and the long tails appearing almost three-dimensional. A striped tent wall screens the entrance from the fenced courtyard, and a tower rises above the horizon, framed by two large pine trees. A wonderful image with beautiful detail, including burnishing on the black kimono and embossing on the white kimono collars and lining.
