Heron Painting Taking Flight, 1892

Comments - Intriguing scene of an upper-class Heian era family on a verandah, astounded as they watch a painting of a heron that the beauty has just created take flight and fly through the sky at left. The two girls gesture excitedly at the sight, while the beauty smiles, the paintbrush still in her hand and paints and tools scattered about the floor. The beauty wears an elegant outer kimono which trails onto the floor beside her, her long black hair reaching to the hem of the robe. The nobleman wears an intricately patterned blue robe and a tall black court cap burnished to a subtle sheen. A cherry tree blooms outside, nicely framing a fine view of a lovely lake and garden. Fantastic detail in this colorful and beautifully drawn triptych.
