Original Fuse Choharu Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty Knitting, 1946

Series; Woodblock Poetry Collection, 1946

Woodblock Poetry Collection - Great design from a series of woodblock beauties illustrating a collection of poems by Takahashi Kikutaro, a successful songwriter who earned fame starting with his first hit "Sake Doth Move Us to Tears or Sighs" in 1931. The artists Fuse Choharu and Yamashita Fumito each contributed designs. Published in 1946 by Bunreisha, the group includes many pin-up girls of the type prevalent during WWII, an unusual subject for Japanese woodblocks. Others are done in the style of Nakahara Junichi, whose popular illustrations of charming young women with large eyes in the 1920s and 1930s became the forerunner of Japanese manga. A fascinating group of images from the early post-WWII era in Japan. See example of publisher's label below (not included).
