Young Boy about to Commit Suicide, 1884 - Poignant image from a kabuki play of a young boy about to commit ritual suicide. The child sits at lower left, baring his chest as he grips a knife wrapped in white silk. He looks up with a sad but determined expression, his lips tightly closed. The samurai Fujiwara Nakamitsu stands behind him to serve as his second, gripping a sword, ready to finish the deed if necessary. At right, the nobleman Tada Mitsunaka frowns angrily as he stares at the samurai. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kintaro as Yukitoshimaru, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichikawa Sadanji. A moving scene with restrained yet expressive figures.
