Tokyo Exhibition of Firemen - Interesting depiction of the New Year exhibition of firemen in Tokyo, a ceremony known as "Dezomeshiki." The members of the different fire brigades gather together in a procession designed to ensure fire safety for the New Year. A crowd watches as at upper left, a man a performs acrobatic stunts called "hashigonori" atop a ladder carried by his fellow firemen. His headband has come off and falls through the air below. Fringed brigade standards called matoi are arranged in a row along the edge of the street, and other people watch from a modern building beyond. A nicely detailed image of this annual tradition.
