Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shirai Gonpachi and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Banzui Chobei, 1862

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the tale of the famous otokodate Banzui Chobei, who accidentally encounters Shirai Gonpachi, a young man who is wanted for the murder of his uncle. The pair meet at Suzu-ga-Mori while traveling one night, where Gonpachi fights off a gang trying to capture him for a reward. At left, Chobei regards the young man with a frown as he emerges from his palanquin, the handle of his sword wrapped in cloth. Gonpachi scowls angrily as he eyes the traveler suspiciously, gripping his sword in one hand as he pushes up his sleeve with the other. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII. A bold design with the large figures nicely filling the composition.
