Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Meijiza: October Kaomise Kyogen, 1899

Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of a Ichikawa Sadanji as the warrior Kamakura Gongoro, the hero of the famous play "Shibaraku," striking a pose holding his sword in the air, flanked by two large drums. He turns his head to the side with a frown, his other hand clenched in a fist before him. His outer orange kimono with a green and white geometric inset has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a red and white kimono over a suit of armor, the sleeves tied back with a heavy purple and white cord with tasseled ends. His flared wig and red stage makeup add to his imposing appearance. An inset at upper right shows a samurai in an earlier style in the same pose. A terrific design with the large bold figure filling the page, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black wig and the black areas of the drums. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the armor and kimono.
