The Subscription List

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the popular play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attempting to flee cross the border disguised as monks to evade Yoshitsune's brother, Yoshitomo. The aristocrat Togashi, shown at right in a blue kamishimo patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. Here, Minamoto's faithful retainer Benkei reacts with anger as Togashi challenges him. He wears a black vest and green sashes adorned with pompoms over a kimono tucked into pants, a black cap tied beneath his chin and a string of prayer beads in his outstretched hand. Two rows of musicians line the back of the stage, playing drums, a flue, and shamisen. The first time we've seen this interesting subject. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black vest and a dusting of mica over Benkei.
