The Carriage Scene from Sugawara, 1899 - Handsome kabuki portrait of the young brothers Umeomaru and Sakuramaru in the carriage scene from the play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," a tale about samurai triplets who become the victims of divided loyalties. At top, Umeomaru lifts his basket hat high above his head as he stares menacingly over his shoulder, his red stage makeup giving him a fierce appearance. Sakuramaru kneels before him, his lips pursed. Each wears a bold purple plaid outer robe over a red kimono patterned with blossoms. Nice fine line work in the hair, with burnishing on the black obi and hair.
