Couple at New Year's, 1859

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a couple at New Year's. The beauty smiles as she looks up, a mask of the Goddess Okame in her hand. Her kimono is shaded from violet to yellow with a chrysanthemum pattern. Her companion carries a branch decorated with auspicious objects for the holiday, including a turnip, a target with an arrow through it, and a large die. A circular inset at upper right depicts a nobleman with a fan scowling angrily. Blossoming plum branches frame the scene above. A handsome design with wonderful detail.

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown
