Hanjiro Sakamoto (1882 - 1969) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Enoki Temple Shrine

Series; Five Scenes of Tsukushi

Five Scenes of Tsukushi - Strikingly modern, almost abstract landscape by the artist Hanjiro Sakamoto from the series "Japan Scenery Prints," which was originally published in 1918 and included works by several artists. Sakamoto was born in Tsukushi, the area north-west of Kyushu. Sakamoto's prints have a very painterly quality with soft gradations of color and almost abstract shapes, giving them a dreamy feel. We rarely see prints by Sakamoto. His intriguing, somewhat mysterious designs are a great choice for a collector interested in modern Japanese woodblocks. This reprint is from a 1970 edition titled "Five Scenes of Tsukushi," published by Kato Junji of the Kato Print Institute, with embossed seal in right margin.
