Two Heroes Battling at the foot of Ryozanpaku Mountain, 1884

Comments - Terrific illustration of two heroes battling at the foot of Ryozanpaku Mountain in a scene from on the classic Chinese novel, "The Water Margin" (Suikoden in Japanese). At left, Youshi (Yang Zhi in Chinese), recoils to dodge a blow from his enemy. He grips his weapon above his head with both hands, grimacing angrily, his brows furrowed. In the center, Rinchu (Lin Chong in Chinese) lunges ahead with his sword, the wind whipping his hair under the falling snow. Both men wear exotic floral patterned robes over pants tucked into tall leather boots. A boat rounds a bend of the river at right, with their leader Ohrin gesturing and yelling at the fighters. A dramatic winter setting with softly shaded mountains in the distance, the snow contrasting beautifully with the deep blue water. A fascinating image, detailed with burnishing in the boots and black areas of the robes.
