Series; Flowers of Edo in Old times

Mori Takachika of Hagi on the Sankin-kotai Procession - Handsome scene of the daimyo Mori Takachika of the capital of Hagi in the Choshu Domain making the procession to Edo for the sankin-kotai or alternate attendance. The Tokugawa Shogunate required daimyo to alternate residence between their own capitals and the shogun's court in Edo every other year. Here, the long retinue leaves a town along the water's edge. In the center, four men toss two plumed standards back and forth, followed by a row of samurai carrying bows over their shoulders. Takachika rides in a palanquin at right, surrounded by retainers. The procession stretches curves around the shore to the edge of a village where a tea stall sits at the water's edge. A great panoramic view, detailed with faint embossing on the white plumes. An interesting depiction of the alternate attendance policy.
