Tossing Gifts at New Year's

Comments - Amusing scene of upper-class ladies tossing New Year's Day gifts to their servants. The women scramble for the presents in the snow, fighting over the colorful cloth bags and scrolls tied with ribbon. A beauty tosses them from inside the house, the sliding panels opened up onto the garden. A young girl kneels beside her, along with another woman sitting next to an elegant lacquer tray filled with additional gifts. She smiles in amusement, holding the sleeve of her blue floral kimono to her chin. A snow-covered plum tree covered with blossoms and buds frames a view of the lake beyond. An attractive subject, nicely detailed with light embossing on the white kimono collars, and burnishing on the hair and the black lacquer elements at right.
