Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Genke Hachidai Megumi no Tsuwamono, 1847

Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Genke Hachidai Megumi no Tsuwamono" featuring Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Akugenda Yoshihira and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Hasebe Choshichi Nobutsuna. Above, Yoshihira grimaces strangely as he grips his sword upright against his shoulder. He wears a striking black kimono patterned with a dragon over a suit of armor. Nobutsuna kneels before him, a worried expression on his face as he throws his hand out in alarm. Nice expressive figures.
