The Great Battle between the Minamoto and the Taira at Ichi-no-Tani, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Great panoramic view of the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress, and other troops to the east and west along the coast. At the appointed time, all three attacked. At left, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane races along the shore after the young Taira Prince Atsumori, who has waded into the water in an effort to escape. Kumagai waves his fan wildly at his young foe, a cloak billowing out behind him as he rides. At right, Yoshitsune and his troops begin descending the steep hill of Hiyodori-goe Gorge. The legendary warrior Hatakeyama Shigetada carries his horse over his shoulders to avoid possible injury to his animal. The rooftop and tower of the castle can be seen among blossoming cherry trees below. The first time we've seen this dramatic design.
