Seki no To, 1899 - Dramatic scene from the play commonly known as "Seki no To." The barrier guard Sekibei is shown attacking the lovely courtesan Sumizome, who is actually the spirit of a cherry tree that Sekibei attempted to chop down while drunk. The wild-haired warrior grips an ax over his shoulder, grimacing angrily at the beauty. She crouches before him, clutching a blossoming cherry branch as a weapon. A dramatic design.
