Rivals Arguing in the Yoshiwara, 1884

Comments - Great image from the popular kabuki play commonly known as "Sukeroku," showing the young street knight, Sukeroku, who is actually one of the Soga Brothers in disguise, arguing with the elderly samurai Ikyu. The object of the dispute is the lovely courtesan Agemaki, with whom both are in love, who stands at right watching with a sober expression. At left, Sukeroku has drawn his sword, staring solemnly up at the older man. Ikyu is filled with rage, grimacing at the young street knight, his arms folded firmly across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his dragon print robe. From left, the actors are Bando Kakitsu I as the white sake seller, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Sukeroku, Nakamura Shikan IV as Ikyu, Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Shiratama, and Suketakaya Takasuke IV as Agemaki. The teahouses of the Yoshiwara stretch back into the distance beneath a full moon glowing in a deep blue sky, the scene framed by blossoming cherry trees. Beautifully detailed with embossing on Ikyu's beard and hair, and burnishing on Sukeroku's black kimono.
