Shitenno Taijimanokami Lifting a Horse, 1885

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene showing the strong man Shitenno Taijimanokami lifting a horse high above his head with both arms, grasping the surprised animal by one foreleg and one hind leg. The Shogun Hashiba Hideyoshi watches soberly at left, wearing a fine dragon robe over his armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon. The warrior Kato Kiyomasa rushes forward at right, a concerned expression on his face. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Ichikawa Gonjuro. The three large figures are wonderfully detailed with expressive features, carefully drawn hair, and colorful armor. A fantastic composition and an unusual and intriguing subject.
