Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesans in the Yoshiwara

Comments - Lovely scene of three courtesans strolling through the Yoshiwara on a spring evening, blossoming cherry trees framing the night sky above. The beauty in the center wears an outer robe patterned with peonies, tied with a black obi that features a lion. She smiles as she looks back over her shoulder at her companion, whose kimono is decorated with chrysanthemums. The kimono of the courtesan at right has a turtle with long moss flowing from its shell, a symbol of longevity. People in dark silhouette walk along the street behind them, including a servant balancing a tray of food atop his head. A beautiful, classic Edo era beauty design.
