Gathering Rock Mushrooms at Kumano, Kishu Province, 1859 - Fascinating scene of workers suspending in baskets high over a gorge, gathering iwatake or rock mushrooms from the sides of the rocky cliffs, a delicacy used in cooking. One man stretches up his hand to pluck the fungus, a smaller basket nearby to hold the harvest. His fearless companion smiles and chats happily. The ropes are tied to trees overhanging the deep valley, with a river rushing down below. An intriguing subject with a handsome composition and attractive color.
