Rabbit and Rooster

Series; Fashionable Matched Pictures of Zodiac Pairs

Rabbit and Rooster - Charming portrait of a beauty carrying a beautiful fan depicting a white rabbit. Her blue and white cotton kimono is wrapped loosely about her, and her hair is tied back with a white ribbon. The title cartouche takes the form of a scroll unrolling and features a rooster, represented the second animal of the zodiac featured in the series title. Beautiful soft pink shading above the eyes with a delicately embossed line at the eyebrows. A lovely design, rarely seen in reprint.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
