Series; Fifty Poems on Contemporary Customs (Tosei fuzoku gojuban uta awase shita)

Fifty Poems on Contemporary Customs - Amusing design from the series "Fifty Poems on Contemporary Customs," which features poems by Ikebe Toen with woodblock illustrations by Asai Chu. The series gently pokes fun at the new modern trends during the Meiji era, with each print depicting two figures, ranging from laborers and beauties to businessmen and dandies, and even a photographer, Asai Chu was a well-known Western-style painter who taught extensively and founded the Kansai Bijutsu-in (the Kansai Art Institute). First published in 1907, the prints in this group come from a later edition by Unsodo, printed on light tan paper. An interesting commentary on life during the Meiji era.
