Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Horse Racing at Shinobazu, 1885

Comments - Terrific illustration of races at the Union Horse Racing Club's racetrack around Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park. A festive atmosphere prevails with strings of red lanterns hanging from flagpoles, and small toys showering down from fireworks exploding in the sky. Boats flying colorful flags enjoy the view from the water. The box at right is crowded with visitors watching the horses rounding the curve below. A lively scene with handsome panoramic view of the race track.
