These beautiful images bring the history and legends of Japan to life with colorful characters and a wonderful attention to detail. Note the appealing compositions and fine printing in these Meiji era masterworks, many of which include deluxe treatments such as burnishing, embossing, or the addition of mica. These attractive designs are a nice choice to collect or display.

Date Mansion, No. 25 - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Meiboku Sendai Hagi," based on the true 16th century story of efforts to overthrow the Date clan in the northern town of Sendai. The beautiful nursemaid Masaoka clutches the young family heir in her arms during an assassination attempt as a samurai wrestles an intruder to the ground. Ladies of the palace arrive holding lanterns to see the cause of the commotion. Above, the inset shows a loyal Date retainer, Arajishi Otokonosuke, battling with an attacker at the family's castle. Wonderful detail in the sumptuous kimono fabrics and screens filling the room, with burnishing on the black robes and embossing on the white kimono trim.
