Bando Hikosaburo as Onigatake, 1861

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo as the sumo wrestler Onigatake. The enraged athlete raises his sandal above his head to throw it at his rival, a serious insult. He scowls angrily, his lips tightly pressed together and his brows furrowed. He wears a yellow green coat over a blue plaid kimono and red under robe, his hair pulled back into a thick topknot tied with white cord. A striking design, detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing on the black collars.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Losses at corner, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and ink offsetting, a few creases, vertical line where backing papers meet. Please see photos for details.
