Buddhist Statue Coming to Life, 1850

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a Buddhist statue of a nun coming to life. A samurai sitting on the base of the statue looks up with an angry frown as the figure reaches out her hands, a distraught expression on her face. He draws his sword, ready to fight if needed. At right, another samurai emerges from the foliage, scowling at the man sitting on the statue. At left, a Buddhist nun looks up with a sweet smile, a portable trunk containing a statue of a deity on her back. She leans on a shakujou, a staff topped with a ringed finial that is carried by pilgrims. Waves crash against the shore behind her. An interesting and unusual design, with expressive figures and nice detail in the setting.
