Sawamura Tanosuke as Akizuki's Daughter Miyuki, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke as Miyuki in the play "Diary of a Morning Glory" (Asagao Nikki). The daughter of the daimyo Akizuki Yuminosuke, Miyuki meets the samurai Miyagi Asojiro when their boats pass while hunting fireflies on the Uji River. The pair fall in love, and he writes a poem on her fan decorated with morning glories. Here, she tilts her head with a coy smile, holding the fan in her hand. Her kimono is patterned with chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms and her hair is adorned with colorful floral ornaments and ribbons. Fireflies glow in the night sky above the water. A charming design with an attractive setting.
