Beauty and Angry Man, 1867

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a man scowling angrily at a beauty, holding his hand out in a stopping motion as he hunches forward. She smiles back at him calmly as she adjusts a hairpin. A man crouching behind her holds a pair of sandals, looking up at her with a worried expression, his eyes wide. At right, a commoner grins slyly as he watches the couple, wearing in a bold chrysanthemum patterned blue kimono over a black undergarment and black pants, his own sandals in his hand. The stage curtain can be seen at right, and a border of mandarin oranges runs across the top of the illustration. Nice expressive figures.
