The Soga Brothers Confronting Kudo Suketsune, 1893

Comments - Handsome scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, two young samurai whose father was murdered by the nobleman Kudo Suketsune while they were children. They vowed to avenge his death, and here, they confront Suketsune during a hunt at the foot of Mt. Fuji. At left, the impetuous younger brother Goro lunges forward, ready to attack his enemy while Soga Juro attempts to hold him back with an outstretched hand. At upper right, Suketsune scowls as he stares at his attacker. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Onoe Kikugoro, and Ichikawa Danjuro. An interesting design with an attractive setting.
