Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Konoshita Soga megumi no masagoji" about the samurai Ishikawa Goemon, who is disguised as a courtier while he seeks to avenge his father's death. At right, Goemon glares angrily as he gestures at the two guards in the center. He wears a striking black tunic patterned with swirling thunderclouds over full pants, a court cap on his head. The guards react with strange grimaces as an elderly man grips the leg of one of them. At left, a young woman leans forward with a slight smile, while a man waits in a palanquin outside the door. The left panel features Nakamura Aizo, Onoe Kikujiro II, and Nakamura Kasuke. The center panel includes Ichikawa Hirogoro I, Arashi Jitohachi III, and Morita Kanya XI. Ichikawa Kodanji IV plays Goemon. Nice expressive figures.
