Yamashiro, Snow at Rokuhara, Prime Minister Monk Jokai, No. 14 - Fantastic image of the ruthless leader Taira no Kiyomori standing on the verandah of Rokuhara mansion overlooking a garden in winter. In his quest for political power, the brutal Kiyomori killed or crushed any opponents who stood in his way. In his later years, he was haunted by his actions, and began to see the spirits of those he had murdered. Here the snowy garden has turned into a nightmare of skull-shaped mounds, the bare branches of a shrub becoming a bony skeleton that taunts him. The inset above shows the Itsukushima Shrine on the Inland Sea, a Shinto site frequented by Kiyomori. A haunting and memorable scene, the most sought after design from the "Snow, Moon, Flowers" series, detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer railing. This incredible print is a true Chikanobu masterwork. Beautiful color and impression.
