Yamashiro, Flowers of Kiyomizu, Princess Sakura, No. 18 - Fantastic design of the beautiful Princess Sakura committing suicide by jumping off the verandah of Kiyomizu Temple. The priest Seigen's love for the young princess led to this tragedy. In this version of the tale, Sakura leaps to her death in springtime, among the blossoming cherry trees surrounding the temple. She is shown here holding an umbrella, a resolute expression as she faces her fate, her obi fluttering in the wind beside her. The setting sun spreads an orange glow across the horizon. The inset above shows Seigen burning his lover's possessions. A dramatic scene from this classic story, enhanced with delicate embossing on the white kimono trim.
