Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan

Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Mori Motonari Attacking Sue Harutaka at Itsukushima, 1880 - Fantastic scene from the only battle ever fought on the sacred island of Miyajima, the great Battle of Miyajima between the forces of Sue Harukata and Mori Motonari. In 1555, Sue attacked a fort that Mori had built on the island. The next day under cover of a thunderstorm, Mori and his three sons attacked the island by sea from both sides, leading to a dramatic victory. Here, the warrior stands in the prow of his ship alongside the torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine built over the water, waving his tasseled command baton as he launches the attack. Clouds of reddish smoke drift over the sea as raindrops slant across the dark night sky. A dramatic design with bokashi shading on the water and sky.
