Udaisho Minamoto no Yoritomo Releasing Cranes, 1876 - Incredible scene of Minamoto no Yoritomo releasing one thousand cranes on the shore at Yuigahama, as part of a Buddhist ceremony for a festival of Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine. The cranes fly overhead, a symbol of longevity and good luck, as Yoritomo's retainers gather around, one lifting a basket to free a large bird. Yoritomo sits on a folding stool dressed in court robes, watching as the cranes depart, white-capped waves crashing behind him. A great depiction of this legendary event, beautifully detailed.
