Series; Fifty-four Chapters of the False Genji, 1864

Fifty-four Chapters of the False Genji - Charming scene from Kunisada II's series based on the 1828 novel "A False Murasaki's Country Genji," a parody of the famous "Tale of Genji." The series illustrates the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, and his encounters with the upper class. These beautiful images feature elegant kimono fabrics and accessories, drawn with fine line work and richly colored. Each print has a decorative fan inset with verse at the top and figures below. Nicely detailed with a faint embossed pattern of seashells and waves in the background. The decorative green border features Genji symbols. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many prints from this series in its collection. A handsome Edo era series.

Condition - This print with good color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling. Most prints have a few creases, spots, or stains. Please see photos for details.
