Series; Military Brilliance for the Eight Views, 1836

Night Rain at Suso Moor, 1836 - Terrific image from a rare series comparing Japanese heroes to the eight traditional landscape views popular in Japanese artwork. Here the famous Soga Brothers are about to enter the hunting tent of Suketsune, their father's murderer, during the shogun's hunting party at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Their swords in hand, the two young warriors wait with grim determination outside the sliding doors, Goro kneeling with his ear to the opening as he listens for any sounds inside. The driving rain is relentless, pouring down in straight lines against the stormy gray sky. An incredible depiction of the moments before these brave samurai will finally avenge their father's death. A great scene from this legendary tale of honor and heroism.
