Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Oiso: The Snipe Rising Marsh and the Hermitage of Saigyo; Sawamura Sojuro III as Soga no Juro Sukenari, with Tora of Oiso - Attractive design from a collaborative Tokaido series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. In the foreground, Toyokuni III depicts Sawamura Sojuro III as Soga no Juro Sukenari, the elder of the two Soga Brothers, looking down with a worried, unhappy expression, his hands clasped before him. At right, his sweetheart, the courtesan Oiso no Tora, uses a tissue to wipe clean a comb, watching her companion with dismay, her mouth slightly agape. The sleeves of her red kimono are tied back with a purple sash, and her hair is styled in a looped ponytail. Above, Hiroshige shows a view of Oiso, with the village at lower right and pines and what look like stone markers dotting the sloping hillside at upper right. Nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim. This print is from a later edition with a colored background.
