Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sawamura Tanosuke as Tokiwa Gozen, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke as Lady Tokiwa, the widow of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, and her children in the snow. After Taira no Kiyomori killed Yoshitomo, and Lady Tokiwa fled with her three sons. Here, she looks up with a wary expression as she lifts her black lacquer hat above her head. She holds her baby to her chest, sheltering her middle child under her kimono. Her oldest son clings to her arm behind her. Snow blankets the pine branches framing the night sky above. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight separation at ends of horizontal centerfold, a few small wormholes, a couple thinning spots, repaired. Soiling, slight toning, rippling. Please see photos for details.
