Ichikawa Udanji as Koya Saihei, 1882

Comments - Terrific portrait of the actor Ichikawa Udanji in the role of Koya Saihei, the single imposing figure filling the frame. He appears in the dress of a lion dancer, with a flowing red. He stretches his hand out in alarm, leaning forward aggressively while holding out his kimono sleeve with his other hand. His red outer robe features a geometric pattern with peony blossoms in metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone, worn over a blue and white striped kimono. A lovely calligraphic drawing of a pine tree fills the background, providing a subtle counterpart to the bold character. Beautifully detailed with faint embossing on the red wig and the white areas of the kimono. This image is illustrated on page 112 of Amy Reigle Newland's recent book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master, Toyoharu Kunichika." A fantastic design bordered by the three-concentric rice measure crest of the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors.
