Evening Bell at Suma Temple, 1836 - Handsome scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his loyal retainer Musashibo Benkei gathered under a blossoming cherry tree at Suma after Battle of Ichi-no-Tani on March 21, 1184. Yoshitsune sits on a stool at right, staring at a signpost that he has just had erected. He wears a vest over a fine suit of armor and a helmet topped with a dragon. Benkei sits on the ground beside him holding a portable writing set. A shovel is stuck into the ground at lower lefty. Cherry petals fall gently over the scene, a symbol of the transitory nature of life. Nicely detailed. A rarely seen early Kuniyoshi series pairing warriors with the famous "Eight Views."
