A Short Biography of Murasaki Shikibu, 1891

Comments - Lovely scene of Lady Murasaki Shikibu, the Heian era poet and author of the famous "Tale of Genji," at court attending the Empress Shoshi. In the center, Murasaki leans over a low black lacquer desk as she unrolls a written scroll, her long hair trailing over her back. The empress sits on a low platform at left, watching quietly, with two attendants on either side of the room. The women wear elegant robes trimmed with layers of colorful fabric over white kimono tucked into long red pants. A hanging cloth screen at top center provides privacy for the group, and panels decorated with autumn maple leaves line the room. A beautifully detailed image, with embossing on the white areas of the kimono and the hanging fabric panel.

Artist - Ginko (active 1874 - 1897)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 27" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
