Hakone: Yumoto Road, Futagoyama, and Sanmai Bridge; Hatsuhana and Katsugoro - Handsome design from this Tokaido series featuring figures by Toyokuni III and landscapes by Hiroshige. In the foreground, the devoted wife Hatsuhana pushes her crippled husband Katsugoro on a small cart covered with a straw mat as they travel to Hakone, to pray for a miracle to heal him and enable him to achieve revenge. He holds up a lantern as he looks over his shoulder with an angry frown. The beauty tilts her head as she struggles to keep the cart moving under his weight. The evening view of Futagoyama above shows travelers crossing the Sanmai Bridge over the rapids, stone boulders dotting the river below, with rounded hills in the distance. Nicely detailed. This print is from a later edition with a colored background.
