Sawamura Tossho as Hanjiro, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho as the samurai Hanjiro standing on an embankment, frowning angrily as he holds up a message in a cloth. In his other hand he holds a wooden practice sword. Behind him at left, a few wooden posts can be seen with undulating water beyond. A row of red paper lanterns runs across the top of the scene. A nice design with an interesting setting.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight separation at ends of horizontal centerfold, a few small holes, thinning spot, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a couple creases, rippling near top edge. Please see photos for details.
