The Subscription List

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene illustrating the famous play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) which tells the story of how Yoshitsune Minamoto and his faithful retainer Benkei lead his men across the border disguised as monks. The aristocrat Togashi, shown here at right in formal court dress, is charged with intercepting the party. However, Togashi is suspicious of the young porter at lower left, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). Here Benkei gestures angrily, waving his fan and clutching a string a prayer beads. Togashi's two retainers, dressed in matching spider web pattern robes, seem surprised by the outburst. The actors are Ichikawa Danya, Ichikawa [?], Ichikawa Kodanji, Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Danjuro, Ichikawa Kunimatsu, and Ichikawa Sadanji. Nicely detailed with burnishing in Togashi's court cap. A very popular and much-loved kabuki subject.
