Imado: Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the Wrestler Inagawa, 1867 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the sumo wrestler Inagawa Jirokichi. He folds his arms across his chest, tucking them into the sleeves of his red-violet and dark purple plaid kimono, a sullen expression on his face. He faces a difficult decision to choose between fighting honestly or purposely losing a match to pay a debt to his patron. The inset at upper left depicts smoke rising from a pottery kiln at Imado. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading in the background. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
