Playing Hanetsuki, 1899 - Charming image of beauties and young girls playing hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton that is traditionally enjoyed at New Year's. They use decorative battledores called hagoita to send a feathered shuttlecock back and forth. The woman in the center holds her paddle out, watching as a shuttlecock seems to hang in mid-air overhead. Her kimono is shaded from pale lavender to white, bordered with grapes, vines, and wasps. Her fellow player at left wears a red orange robe edged with pine branches and plum blossoms. An attractive holiday subject, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the hair, the black obi, and the black clogs, and embossing on the white kimono collar and trim.
