Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. In the center, the younger brother Soga Goro raises his sword above his head as he glares at Goromaru, one of Suketsune's retainers, who has disguised himself under a woman's pale pink kimono. At right, Soga Juro fights off another warrior, wielding his sword as he turns away, holding his other hand to his head as if dazed. Behind them, red smoke rises from the bonfires beyond the tent walls of the encampment, and a steady rain falls over the scene. Ichikawa Danjuro plays Soga Goro. A lively image with vibrant color and an atmospheric setting, detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone of the sword blades.
